CULTOURA BRIDGES

A project funded by European Union aiming to improve the Vocational Education Training (VET) offered in the field of cultural tourism and upscale VET institutions mainly in Africa and Europe.

Tourism is one of the main sectors of the economy especially in the partner countries that participate in the consortium, both in the Mediterranean (Italy, Greece, Spain), and in Africa (Cape Verde, Senegal, Kenya). African countries have a wealth of local assets that can serve as a motivation for cultural, green, and responsible tourists to visit the continent.

The valorisation of these assets can support the local economies and create income sources and employment opportunities for young people. In the same time, the prioritisation of cultural, green and responsible tourism will promote more sustainable models and will reduce the damages in the natural environment and resources that the current forms of tourism usually bring.

Besides the needs in the cultural tourismsector, improving the match between professional training supply and employer demand is a great challenge in the continent of Africa. In a context where the informal economy prevails and the labour market is highly fickle, the mismatch between available skills and the needs of the economy is an obstacle to employment and growth. This employability issue is all the more important as the continent will see at least one hundred million young people entering the labour market by 2030 due to the demographic increase. Therefore, national VET systems need to be transformed to become more flexible to bridge this difference.
